I was attending a webinar during International Women’s Week, when this book popped up in the Chats section. So I checked to see if it was in my local library’s catalogue and lo and behold it was! So I quickly reserved it. I even mentioned it in the webinar’s chat that they could borrow this for free at the local library.
I’ve never heard of the author Kemi Nekvapil but she is a Nigerian-born English/Australian professional coach and speaker. So this book is about empowerment and its main audience is women and in particular women of colour.
Nekvapil starts off on her story of empowerment (or lack of it) when she was living in the UK as a foster child with 5 different sets of foster parents. She experienced racism as a young person and because of her race and gender, she felt vulnerable and powerless. This book provides the support to all women (black, brown, white) to reclaim their power and honour themselves. Nevapil breaks the book up in different chapters from the POWER acronym:
- PRESENCE – to understand what is and isn’t working in our lives
- OWNERSHIP – of our personal narratives, especially our power stories
- WISDOM – about our needs, boundaries and growth
- EQUALITY – as part oof the diverse human family, all of us worthy
- RESPONSIBILITY – for our choices, healing and happines
I enjoyed reading this book and came out of it with renewed sense of feeling that I could do things without being apologetic. Highly recommended!
